Finding Joy Without Waiting for Life to Get Easier

For a long time, I think I was waiting for life to get easier before I gave myself permission to enjoy it.

I kept telling myself, Once we get through this season, then I’ll be able to breathe.

Once things settle down, I’ll relax.

Once I have fewer things to worry about, I’ll enjoy myself.

Once everything falls into place, I’ll finally feel at peace.

But what happens when one difficult season leads into another?

What happens when you finally get through something you’ve been praying about, only to find yourself facing a new challenge?

I’m learning that if I keep waiting for life to become easier before I allow myself to experience joy, I might spend a lot of time overlooking the beautiful moments God has already placed in front of me.

And I don’t want to do that anymore.

As a wife, mother, and woman of faith, there is always something that needs my attention.

There are responsibilities to handle, plans to make, people to care for, and things to pray about.

Some days, my mind is so focused on what needs to happen next that I forget to appreciate what is happening right now.

I can be sitting in a room filled with laughter while my thoughts are somewhere else entirely.

I can be enjoying a peaceful moment and suddenly begin worrying about tomorrow.

I can receive an answered prayer and almost immediately start thinking about the next thing I need God to do.

And sometimes I have to remind myself:

Lirann, you’re allowed to enjoy this moment.

You’re allowed to laugh even when there are things you’re still praying about.

You’re allowed to celebrate something good even when another part of your life feels uncertain.

You’re allowed to have a beautiful day in the middle of a difficult season.

For some reason, I think we sometimes begin to believe that joy has to be earned.

That we need to finish every task, solve every problem, and overcome every obstacle before we can finally enjoy our lives.

But joy was never meant to be a reward for having everything figured out.

Joy is something we can experience while we’re still figuring things out.

I’m not saying that we should ignore our problems or pretend that difficult situations don’t exist.

There are seasons when life is genuinely hard.

There are days when you feel exhausted, discouraged, or overwhelmed.

There are circumstances that cannot be fixed with a positive attitude or a simple reminder to be grateful.

I know that.

And I also know that having faith doesn't mean we have to smile through everything.

But I’m learning that I can acknowledge what is difficult without allowing it to overshadow everything that is good.

I can have unanswered prayers and still recognize the prayers God has already answered.

I can be concerned about tomorrow and still be grateful for today.

I can carry responsibilities and still make room for laughter.

I can experience sadness and joy in the same season.

One feeling does not have to cancel out the other.

Sometimes joy looks like a family dinner where everyone is laughing.

Sometimes it’s hearing my daughters giggle together.

Sometimes it’s a quiet morning with my Bible and a cup of coffee.

Sometimes it’s receiving an encouraging message from someone at exactly the right time.

And sometimes it’s simply making it through a difficult day and realizing that God gave me the strength I needed.

These moments may seem small, but I’m beginning to understand that they are not insignificant.

They are part of the life God has given me.

And I don’t want to overlook them while waiting for a different version of my life to begin.

The Bible reminds us:

“The joy of the Lord is your strength.” — Nehemiah 8:10

I love that Scripture because it reminds me that joy is not limited to what is happening around me.

My circumstances may change.

My plans may change.

Some days may be easier than others.

But God remains the same.

And even when I don't have the strength to change what I'm going through, I can ask Him to help me recognize the good that still exists within it.

I’m learning to stop telling myself that I’ll be happy when.

When life slows down.

When everything works out.

When I reach the next goal.

When I finally have all the answers.

Because the truth is, there will probably always be something else to accomplish, something else to figure out, or something else to pray about.

And I don't want to spend my entire life waiting for the perfect moment to enjoy the life I'm already living.

So today, I’m choosing to notice the little things.

I’m choosing to celebrate progress, even when the journey isn't finished.

I’m choosing to make memories with my family instead of waiting until every responsibility is taken care of.

I’m choosing to laugh when something is funny, rest when I need to, and thank God for the blessings I might have overlooked yesterday.

And on the days when joy feels difficult to find, I’m choosing not to force it. I can bring those days to God, too.

Because finding joy doesn't mean every day has to be a good day.

It means remembering that a difficult day can still hold something good.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the life You have given me.

Forgive me for the moments when I become so focused on what is missing, what needs to change, or what might happen tomorrow that I overlook the blessings in front of me today.

Help me find joy in the ordinary moments.

Help me appreciate the laughter, the love, the small victories, and the quiet reminders of Your presence.

When life feels overwhelming, remind me that I don't have to wait for every problem to be solved before I can experience Your goodness.

Teach me to be present with my family, grateful for what I have, and hopeful about what is still to come.

And on the days when joy feels far away, meet me where I am. Give me peace without requiring me to pretend that everything is okay.

Lord, help me stop waiting for a perfect life and start appreciating the beautiful moments within the life You've already given me.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

I don't want to look back one day and realize I spent so much time waiting for life to get easier that I forgot to enjoy the life God was giving me along the way.
