When My Heart Needs to Find Its Way Back to God

Sometimes I can tell when something in my heart is off.
I’m still going through my daily routine. I’m taking care of my family, handling responsibilities, and doing what needs to be done. From the outside, everything might look normal.
But on the inside, I know I haven’t been giving God the attention I need to.
My mind has been busy with worries. I’ve been trying to figure things out on my own. I’ve allowed distractions to take up time I could have spent with Him.
And sometimes, if I’m being truthful, I know what God is asking of me, but I keep putting it off.
This morning, I find myself feeling that way.
I didn’t need another plan for how to get my life together. I needed to get my heart back in alignment with God.
It can be uncomfortable to admit that.
It’s easier to blame a busy schedule or a difficult season. And sometimes those things really do make it harder to find quiet moments.
But I also have to be willing to ask myself whether I’ve been making room for God in the middle of everything else.
Have I been praying about the things that worry me, or have I been allowing worry to lead my decisions?
Have I been seeking His guidance, or only asking Him to bless the plans I’ve already made?
Have I been listening when I feel convicted to change something, or finding reasons to wait?
These aren’t questions I ask to make myself feel worse.
They’re questions that help me become honest about where I am.
Because I can’t realign my life with God while pretending there’s nothing I need to change.
One thing I’m learning is that feeling convicted and choosing to respond are two different things.
I can recognize that I need to spend more time in prayer and still reach for my phone first thing in the morning.
I can ask God to give me peace and then spend the rest of the day replaying every possible outcome in my mind.
I can pray for direction and still hesitate when the next step requires me to trust Him.
That doesn’t mean I should stop coming to God until I’ve figured it all out.
It means I need to bring those very struggles to Him.
When I opened my Bible to Psalm 51, I was reminded of David’s prayer:
“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” — Psalm 51:10 (KJV)
What stands out to me is that David wasn’t simply asking God to change what was happening around him.
He was asking God to change what was happening within him.
And that is the prayer I need sometimes.
God, before I ask You to change my circumstances, show me what needs to change in my heart.
Show me where fear has been making my decisions.
Show me where I’ve been holding on to control.
Show me where I’ve been delaying obedience because I’m afraid of what it might require.
Help me recognize the difference between being busy and being so distracted that I stop making time for You.
I’m realizing that realignment doesn’t always begin with a dramatic moment.
Sometimes it begins with a quiet decision to open my Bible instead of immediately reaching for my phone.
Sometimes it means apologizing when I know I was wrong.
Sometimes it means doing the thing I’ve been putting off.
Sometimes it means asking God for wisdom before making another decision.
And sometimes it means admitting that I’m worried instead of pretending that I have everything under control.
I don’t want my relationship with God to become something I only focus on when life feels overwhelming.
I want to seek Him on the ordinary days, too.
I want prayer to be part of how I live, not simply what I turn to when I run out of solutions.
I want to recognize His guidance and have the courage to follow it, even when I don’t know exactly where it will lead.
And when I realize I’ve drifted, I want to respond by turning back to Him rather than allowing guilt to keep me at a distance.
Maybe you’ve been feeling that same pull lately.
You know you need to pray, but you keep finding something else to do.
You know you need to surrender a worry, but you’re afraid of what might happen if you stop trying to control it.
You know there’s a step of obedience you need to take, but you’ve been waiting until you feel ready.
You can begin today.
Not by promising God that you’ll never struggle again, but by being honest with Him about where you are right now.
You don’t have to wait until your heart feels perfectly aligned to turn toward God. Turning toward Him is where realignment begins.
A Prayer for Realignment
Heavenly Father,
I’m coming to You with an honest heart today.
You know where I’ve allowed worry to take over, where I’ve become distracted, and where I’ve delayed doing what I know is right.
Forgive me for the times I’ve tried to lead my own life while asking You to follow along with my plans.
Search my heart and show me what needs to change.
Give me the courage to obey You, even when the next step feels uncomfortable. Help me surrender the things I cannot control and trust You with the outcomes I cannot see.
Teach me to seek You in the ordinary moments, not only when life becomes difficult.
And when I begin to drift again, help me recognize it and turn back to You.
Create in me a clean heart, Lord, and renew a right spirit within me.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
I may not have every part of my life figured out today. But I can choose where I turn my heart.
And today, I’m choosing to turn it back toward God.
