When You’re Tired of Being the Strong One

Sometimes I get tired of being called strong.

I know people mean it as a compliment. And there have been plenty of moments in my life when I’ve had to be strong because, quite frankly, life didn’t give me another option.

But sometimes I don’t want to be the strong one.

Sometimes I want someone to look beyond the smile, beyond everything I managed to get done, beyond the way I somehow keep everything moving and simply ask:

“But who is taking care of you?”

I think a lot of women understand this feeling.

We become the people everyone depends on. We take care of our children. We support our husbands.

We check on our friends and family. We remember appointments, responsibilities, birthdays, schedules, and everything else that needs to happen.

Someone needs something? We figure it out.

Something goes wrong? We handle it.

Life throws another curveball? Somehow, we adjust.

And people look at us and say, “I don’t know how you do it. You’re so strong.”

Meanwhile, sometimes we’re thinking:

I don’t know how I’m doing it either.

There have been seasons when I didn’t feel strong at all.

I was scared.

I was exhausted.

I had questions I couldn’t answer.

I cried when no one was watching and then wiped my face because there were still things that needed to be done.

I prayed while wondering how much more I could handle.

And yet, I kept going.

For a long time, I thought that was what strength looked like—pushing through no matter what.

But I’m beginning to see strength differently.

Maybe strength isn’t always holding everything together.

Maybe sometimes strength is finally admitting:

“I’m tired.”

Maybe strength is asking for help.

Maybe strength is allowing yourself to cry without immediately trying to pull yourself together.

Maybe strength is saying no.

Maybe strength is resting without feeling guilty.

And maybe one of the strongest things we can do is admit that we cannot carry everything ourselves.

I think sometimes we even bring that mentality into our relationship with God.

We pray, but we’re still trying to figure everything out ourselves.

We tell God we trust Him while holding tightly to the very thing we just asked Him to carry.

I know I’ve done it.

God, I give this to You.

Then five minutes later...

Okay, but here’s what I think we should do.

I’m learning that God never asked me to prove how strong I am.

He asked me to trust Him.

There’s a difference.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28

I love that Jesus doesn’t say, “Come to Me once you’ve figured everything out.”

He doesn’t say, “Come to Me when you’ve stopped crying.”

He doesn’t say, “Come to Me after you’ve been strong enough for everyone else.”

He says come weary.

Come burdened.

Come tired.

Come overwhelmed.

Come exactly as you are.

That changes something for me.

Because maybe I don’t have to keep proving that I can handle everything.

Maybe I was never supposed to.

There are going to be days when I am strong.

There will be days when I encourage someone else, handle the hard thing, advocate for my children, take care of my family, pursue my goals, and somehow get everything done.

But there will also be days when I need someone to encourage me.

Days when I need help.

Days when I need rest.

Days when my prayer is nothing more than:

Jesus, I need You.

And I’m learning not to be ashamed of those days.

I don’t want to spend my life being so busy carrying everyone else that I forget I’m allowed to be carried too.

So to the woman who is tired of being the strong one:

You don’t have to have all the answers today.

You don’t have to fix everything tonight.

You don’t have to pretend you aren’t tired.

And you certainly don’t have to prove your strength to God.

Bring Him the tired version of you.

Bring Him the overwhelmed version.

Bring Him the version who doesn’t know what to do next.

You’ve carried enough. Let God carry you for a while.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

I’m tired of trying to be strong all the time.

Thank You for reminding me that I don’t have to carry every burden by myself. Help me recognize when I need to rest, when I need to ask for help, and when I need to simply place what I’m carrying into Your hands.

When I feel like everyone needs something from me, remind me that I can come to You and receive what I need too.

Give me strength when I need to keep going, but also give me wisdom to know when it’s time to stop and rest.

Help me understand that needing You is not weakness.

I don’t have to be strong enough for everything that comes my way because You are strong enough for me.

So today, Lord, I’m putting down what I was never meant to carry alone.

I’ve been the strong one long enough. Today, I’m letting You be my strength.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
